,INTRODUCTION
Conflicts are inevitable in any community. They are multi-dimensional in terms of root
causes, effects and impacts. Conflicts have a relationship with development; either positively
or negatively. Many communities have experienced loss of lives, property, relationships and
years of development due to conflicts. On the other side conflicts have created significant
opportunities for social, economic and political development in communities.


It is evident that there exists a direct interrelationship between conflicts and all spheres of
development. Understanding dynamics of conflicts in the community is crucial in enhancing
and promoting sustainable development. The concept of conflict management and resolution
has of recent times attracted attention especially in light of achievement of vision 2030.
Conflict is heritable and the results of conflict are not predetermined. Conflict might escalate
and lead to non productive results or conflict can be beneficiary. Although very few people
go looking for conflict more often than not, conflict results because of lack of communication
between people with regard to their needs, ideas, goals or values. Conflict management is the
principle that all conflicts cannot necessary be resolved but learning how to manage conflict
help decrease the odds of non-productive escalative conflict. Management involves acquiring
skills related to resolution self-awareness about conflict odds, conflict communication skills
and establishing a structure of management in your environment.


Knowledge and skills on Conflict management and resolution will definitely contribute to
development of the Social, Economic and Political pillars of Vision 2030. This course will
instill in students a rational attitude to conflicts. The students will gain knowledge and skills
on types of conflicts, causes, effects and impacts and conflict resolution in the community.
They will also understand conflict at local and international levels as well as the roles of
various stake holders in conflict management,

CDEV 210: Conflict Management in the Community

Course objectives
This course will instill in students a rational attitude to conflicts. The students will gain
knowledge and skills on types of conflicts, causes, effects and impacts and conflict resolution
in the community. They will also understand conflict at international level and the roles of
NGOs in conflict management,

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the learners will be able to
1. Describe types of conflict
2. Relate causes and effects/Impacts of conflict in the community
3. Show understanding of strategies of conflict resolution
4. Discuss crimes against humanity
6. Explain power in conflict
7. Discuss the role of NGOs in community conflicts

Course Description
Concept of conflict in communities; definitions, schools of thought, theories and views about
conflict. Stages and types of conflicts. Symptoms, causes and triggers of conflict. Effects and
impacts of conflicts to communities. Analysis of conflicts Crimes against Humanity; Gender
based war crime, ICC etc. Approach to conflicts; Strategies of Managing and Resolving
Conflicts Role of Government, NGOs, CBOS and International organizations in conflict
intervention, management and resolution. Conflict management at individual, household,
community and national levels. Power balancing Power in Conflict (Y2S2)

Teaching Methods.
The course entails three lecture hours per week. Lectures, discussions and student
presentations will be used to teach the course. Students will examined using; one sit in CAT
(15%), one assignment (15%) and end semester exam (70%). All students are expected to
attend all lectures.
