RESOURCES AND DEVLOPMENT
What are resources?
Everything available in our environment that can be used to satisfy human needs, provided it
is technologically accessible, economically feasible, and culturally acceptable, is termed a
resource.
A.) Classification of Resources: -
On the Basis of Origin:
Biotic Resources: Resources that come from living things, like plants, animals, and
microorganisms.
Abiotic Resources: Resources that come from non-living things, like minerals, water,
and air.
On the Basis of Exhaustibility:
Renewable Resources: Resources that can be replaced or replenished naturally over
time, like sunlight, wind, and forests.
Non-Renewable Resources: Resources that cannot be replaced quickly or take a long
time to form, like coal, oil, and natural gas.
On the Basis of Ownership:
Individual Resources: Resources owned by a single person, like a private farm or a
personal car.
Community Resources: Resources shared by a group of people, like forests, ponds,
and pastures.
National Resources: Resources owned and managed by a country, like mineral
deposits and rivers.
International Resources: Resources that are shared by multiple countries or are
beyond national boundaries, like the oceans or the atmosphere.
On the Basis of Status of Development:
Potential Resources: Resources that exist in an area but haven’t been fully explored or
developed yet, like wind energy in a region that hasn’t been used.
Developed Resources: Resources that are already known and have been developed for
use, like coal mines or known oil fields.
Reserves: Resources that are known, but are currently not in use due to economic,
technological, or other factors, like untapped oil reserves.
