AIM:
To prepare the benzoic acid from benzamide by hydrolysis process.
PRINCIPLE:
The benzamide is made to undergo hydrolysis by the reaction with an
alkali to give the benzoic acid. This process is known as hydrolysis.
CHEMICALS REQUIRED:
Benzamide = 3.0 g
10% NaOH = 40ml
Conc. HCl = Q.S
PROCEDURE:
Weigh accurately 30.0 g of benzamide and transfer into a clean conical
flask and add 40.0 ml of 10% NaOH solution into it. Mix well and boil the
mixture on a water bath for about 30 – 40 minutes unitl no more ammonia is
evolved
Cool the contents and acedify with sufficient quantity of Conc. HCl acid
to precipitate out the benzoic acid formed.
Filter the precipitate,dry,weigh and calculate the percentage yield
produced
