Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Advertising? If So, How Would That Be
Determined? Controlled?
In the world of business, it’s often challenging to say there’s “too much” of
anything. “Too much time working, too much money being spent, too much
marketing, etc. However, is there such theory that there can be “too much”
advertising? Although this may be deemed to the public as a compelling
determination, I believe that there can never be “too much” advertising because
every company wants their customers persuaded to spend their money on their
products/services. I am convinced that advertising is a neurological manipulation
to the public and whether for a great cause (like donating to children’s hospitals)
it can appeal to people’s emotions in a way to lose control in how people spend
their money. Advertising for “things we do not need” can come off aggressively to
merely pressure someone to buying an unnecessary product or else they will be
less valued by others.
A way advertising can be controlled is by linking advertising to an individual’s
screen time on their device. For instance, if apps like Amazon, Shein, Target, even
Google, are keeping track of people’s screen time on that certain application,
they should reduce the number of ads per half hour/hour to respect their
consumers financial and addiction status. Every business wants consumers to
spend money with them, but with some form of respect and transparency
towards manipulation to their target, it will lessen the struggle, debt, and
irrational decisions we make for ourselves.
