Awareness and Response to WMD Hazards
Required Text
Pichtel, J. Terrorism and WMDs: Awareness and Response, 2nd edition. CRC Press, Boca Raton,
FL.
Course Rationale
The ability of a community to rapidly and effectively recover from the effects of a disaster
requires coordinated planning and participation at many levels. Disaster preparedness and
hazard mitigation can minimize the effects of a release of biological, chemical or nuclear
materials, and ultimately enhance recovery. Trained individuals can assist government agencies
by responding during disaster situations where the scope of the incident has overwhelmed
conventional emergency services. This course was developed to meet the need for well-trained
civilians to address such emergency situations through the development of response teams who
will act during major disasters.
, Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Describe significant terrorism events in recent history.
2. Explain the deployment of first responders at the scene of a disaster.
3. Describe terrorist use of biological, chemical, explosive and nuclear devices.
4. Discuss the effects of chemical, biological, explosive and nuclear releases on human
health and other biota.
5. Explain the techniques and tools for responding to a biological; chemical; explosives;
nuclear/radiological weapons release.
6. Explain the Incident Command System.
7. Discuss the correct use of personal protective equipment and respirators.
8. Discuss decontamination principles.
