Survey of U.S. History C121 Task 3 Western Governors University A. Discuss three major changes in race relations (i.e., laws, amendments, labor arrangements, working conditions, migration patterns, socioeconomic changes) that resulted from Reconstruction (suggested length of 2–3 paragraphs). The first significant law that was brought about from reconstruction was the 14th amendment. This broadened the scope of who was considered a United States citizen. The amendment specified that anybody that was born or naturalized in the U.S. was a citizen. That meant that African Americans were also included. This was the very first time that African Americans had been recognized as citizens, but it was left to the states to determine whether or not they would be given the right to vote. In 1967, another major change occurred, Black men were given the right to vote via the Reconstruction act of 1967. The 15th amendment was the third major change. It specified that states could not restrict citizens in the United States the right to vote based solely on race, color, or if they had been a slave previously (Norton, 2015).
