DMP2 — DMP2 Task 4: Culturally Relevant Applications
A. Describe the culture and demographics of a student population
that is different from your personal experience, with enough
detail to inform part B.
Note: This student population can be real or based on research.
For example, you could consider an urban environment with a
successful and thriving school with a majority of non-European
ancestry students; an extremely rural district with opportunities
in mining, farming, and ecotourism; or a real place like
McFarland, California.
People are different in customs and traditions from one region to another
within the same country. Therefore, it is very common to find out students
with completely different demographical and cultural traditions than their
teachers especially in the United States where we are mixed of several
diverse ethnicities.” The percentage of public school students in the
United States the ELL students were higher in fall 2016 (9.6 percent, or
4.9 million students) than in fall 2000 (8.1 percent, or 3.8 million
students)” (English Language Learners in Public Schools - Indicator April
(2018), 2018). Therefore, these students have their own way of living,
thinking, and understanding things. Teachers have their own cultures and
traditions as well. Teachers not only should comply with professional and
ethical standards - Code of Ethics - and respect their students’ traditions
and customs but also they should do everything possible to provide
students with the best education. They should take into consideration the
differences between themselves and their students and use the best
teaching strategies to help them understand the lesson goals in the best
and easiest way. In the United States, a lot of students come from
different demographics and cultures than their peers and teachers.
