UNIT- 3
READING AND WRITING SKILLS

Reading Style: Skimming, Scanning, Churning & Assimilation
Reading is the process of understanding written text by decoding symbols, such as letters or
characters, and linking the author’s ideas with the reader’s prior knowledge. It involves not
just recognizing words but also extracting meaning and relating new information to existing
understanding.
Reading comprehension, a key aspect of this process, is the ability to process text, grasp its
meaning, and connect it with prior knowledge. To achieve effective comprehension, readers
use four main styles, each designed for a specific purpose:

1. Skimming
Skimming is a fast reading technique aimed at quickly grasping the main idea of a text. The
reader runs through the passage to get an overview of the content, focusing on headlines,
subheadings, and key phrases. This method helps identify the general theme or the essence of
the text. For example, when reading a newspaper or magazine article, you skim through the
content to understand the key points while skipping over detailed information. Skimming is
ideal for getting the gist of a topic without delving into the details.

2. Scanning
Scanning involves a slower, more focused reading technique where the reader searches for
specific information within the text. This approach is useful when looking for particular
details, such as names, dates, or definitions. For example, when using a dictionary, you scan
the pages to locate a specific word. Scanning requires the readers to move their eyes quickly
over the text, filtering out unnecessary information to find the desired data. It is an efficient
way to extract specific facts or figures from a larger body of text.

3. Churning
Churning is a deeper, more reflective style of reading. It is slower than scanning and focuses
on understanding the concepts and making inferences. Churning involves analyzing and
interpreting the text to derive the meaning of the ideas being presented. Readers engage with
the text multiple times to digest the information, summarize the main points, and connect

them to broader concepts. This style is often used for understanding complex ideas or
gathering insights from detailed reports. It requires careful reading to capture both primary
and secondary ideas in depth.

4. Assimilation
Assimilation is the final stage in the reading process, where the reader fully internalizes the
information. It involves comprehending the text to the point where the reader can answer
questions, recall details, and apply the knowledge. This stage comes after skimming,
scanning, and churning, where the information has been processed and understood at a deeper
level. Assimilation ensures that the reader has absorbed and integrated the material into their
understanding, allowing for the application of knowledge in practical or academic contexts.

Effective Writing Tools and Methods
Effective Writing Tools: Writing is a powerful tool for communication, allowing individuals
to share ideas, inform others, argue a point, or express creativity. Whether in academic
settings, business environments, or personal expression, the ability to convey ideas clearly
and persuasively is essential. However, writing is not just about stringing words together; it’s
about presenting those words in a way that is logical, engaging, and impactful. To achieve
effective writing, several key principles must be followed to ensure clarity and understanding.
Among the most vital elements of successful writing are Unity, Coherence, and Emphasis.
These three principles are foundational in ensuring that a piece of writing is organized, easy
to follow, and able to capture the reader’s attention. They are interlinked and play a crucial
role in the overall effectiveness of the written word.

To write effectively, three key aspects must be mastered:

1. Unity
Unity means that all the sentences in a paragraph focus on a single main idea or topic. This
helps avoid unnecessary or unrelated information, ensuring that the reader easily understands
the main point of the paragraph.
How to achieve Unity:
• Topic Sentence: Begin with a clear topic sentence that introduces the main idea of the
paragraph. This sentence should summarize what the paragraph will discuss.

• Supporting Sentences: Ensure that every sentence following the topic sentence
relates directly to the main idea and provides additional details, examples, or
explanations.
• Stay on Topic: Avoid introducing new ideas or topics that don’t directly support the
paragraph’s main point. If an idea doesn’t support the paragraph’s focus, it might
belong in a new paragraph.

2. Coherence
Coherence refers to the logical flow and connection between sentences in a paragraph. It
helps readers follow the argument or narrative without confusion.
How to achieve Coherence:
• Transitional Words and Phrases: Use transition words (e.g., ‘for example’, ‘in
addition’, ‘therefore’, ‘on the other hand’) to guide the reader through the paragraph
and connect ideas.
• Logical Order: Arrange your sentences in a logical sequence that makes sense
(chronologically, by importance, or cause and effect).
• Consistent Point of View and Tense: Maintain a consistent tone, point of view, and
verb tense throughout the paragraph to avoid confusion.

3. Emphasis
Emphasis refers to highlighting the most important parts of the paragraph to make them stand
out. This helps ensure the reader grasps the central point and any critical details.
How to achieve Emphasis:
• Strategic Placement: Place the most important information in the most prominent
positions, usually at the beginning or the end of the paragraph.
• Repetition: Reiterate key terms or ideas in slightly different ways to reinforce them.
• Varied Sentence Structure: Use varied sentence lengths and structures to draw
attention to key ideas. Short, punchy sentences can be particularly effective for
emphasis.
• Contrast and Comparison: You can emphasize points by contrasting them with
other ideas, which can make the main idea stand out more clearly.

Sample Paragraph with Unity, Coherence, and Emphasis:
• Topic Sentence: “Exercise is essential for maintaining both physical and mental
health.”
• Supporting Sentences: “Regular physical activity can lower the risk of chronic
diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Additionally, exercise boosts mental
health by releasing endorphins, which help reduce stress and improve mood.
According to a study by the Mayo Clinic, just 30 minutes of moderate exercise can
have significant benefits for both body and mind.”
• Emphasis: “The most important benefit, however, is the improvement in mental well-
being. When we exercise, our brain produces chemicals that can combat feelings of
anxiety and depression, making it a powerful tool for mental health management.”
• Conclusion: “Overall, exercise is a simple yet highly effective way to improve both
your body and mind.”

How to Improve Writing Skills
Good writing is more than just putting words on a page—it’s about effectively
communicating your ideas. Here are some tips to improve your writing:

1. Think Before You Write
Take time to clarify your thoughts before beginning. Ask yourself:
• What is the purpose of this piece?
• What are the key points I want to communicate?
• What tone should I adopt?
By organizing your thoughts, you can avoid confusion and ensure a coherent flow.

2. Do Your Research
Accuracy is essential in professional writing. Conduct thorough research to gather reliable
information and statistics. Whether you are drafting a report, proposal, or article, well-
researched content builds trust and demonstrates credibility.

3. Create an Outline
An outline acts as a roadmap for your writing. Break your content into sections with clear
headings or bullet points. This step helps maintain focus and prevents ideas from becoming
scattered. A well-structured piece is easier to write—and easier to read.
