Adam Barnes Plan
Therapeutic modalities, health promotion, and education:
Enterobiasis (Pinworms):
1. It is important to refrain from making the patient and the family feel as if
they have a hygiene issue. Doing so can be insulting and can prevent them
to trust you as a provider.
2. Explain and educate the patient and his mother that this diagnosis is
common in children at A.B.’s age group. Commonalities include children
in school and daycare programs and pinworms are spread easily.
3. Pinworms have almost 100% curability.
4. Educate patient and mother to wash hands often.
5. Educate patient and mother to wash perianal area at least once a day.
6. Educate patient and mother to get a nail scrub to remove fecal matter
and pinworm eggs.
7. Educate patient importance to stop biting nails.
8. Change underwear at least once a day.
9. Wash underwear, clothes, sheets, towels, and any other garments used
on high heat wash.
10.Educate patient to refrain from scratching anal area.
11.Educate patient that scratching anal area and then biting nails transmits
fecal matter to mouth.
12.Order anal tape test to properly diagnose and formulate treatment
plan for the patient.
13.Prescribe Mebendazole 100 mg tab orally single dose. Repeat in 2
weeks. Repeat again in 3 weeks if not cured
14.Educate mother that pinworms are highly contagious so family should
be treated with Mebendazole.
15.Educate mother how and when to apply anal tape to patient. Vyas (2020)
states to firmly press the sticky side of a 1-inch (2.5 centimeters) strip of
cellophane tape over the anal area for a few seconds so the eggs stick to the
tape.
16.A.B. can return to school after dose of Mebendazole is taken.
