Science Note Taking
STEP 1: ARRANGE YOUR PAPER (2min)
- Make page 1 an On Your Own page. Label it.
- Beginning page 2, make a left side margin. Create this margin on the front and
back for every page you use.
Step 2: GLANCE THROUGH, DEFINE, & COPY TABLES/FIGURES (1-1.5 hrs)
- Flip through the entire module, taking a mental note of headings and about how
long the module is.
- Moving at a quick pace without much reading, copy down the section headings
in your left margin in your color of choice.
- In a separate color, copy down in the writing section any of that section’s BLUE
terms and their definitions.
- In another color, copy down any of that section’s tables, charts or copy-able
figures
- Leave an appropriate amount of space for later note taking
- DO NOT READ THE SECTION AT THIS TIME
- Move to next section and repeat
STEP 3: NOTE TAKING (appx 3-4 hrs)
- Go back to the beginning of the module.
- Look at the first section and skim it (what is this section about?)
- Now read that section carefully, underlining important words or sentences as
you go.
- Choose another color, and in the note taking section on your paper, write key
word style notes for that section’s important facts or sentences.
- In the left margin, jot down a handful of key words to remind you what this
section is about
- YOU HAVE NOW INTERACTED WITH THAT SECTION’S INFORMATION IN 4 WAYS!
- Repeat with next section.
- Stop to complete OYO exercises as you go.
- DO NOT NEGLECT THE “THINK ABOUT THIS” OR THE TABLES AND FIGURES. TAKE
TIME TO LOOK AT THEM CAREFULLY.
STEP 4: STUDY GUIDE (appx 20 mins)
- Work through the study guide mentally and orally. Write any answers that are
necessary to write down (like if they ask you to make a table/graph)
