Lecture "8" / Suture: Suture Classification, suturing techniques,
Equipment's, Principles of suturing, Suture removal,
Suture- is a stich or series of stiches made to secure the apposition of the
edges of surgical or traumatic wound.
Suture Classification;
* Absorbable: as polyglycolic acid, polyglactin, catgut, polydioxanone.
* Non-Absorbable; as Nylon, cotton or linen fibers, Polyester, and stainless
steel.
Equipments:
* Needle holder.
* Suture needle.
* Suture material.

Suturing Techniques:
1. The needle is passed from one edge of the incision to another and again
from the latter edge to the first edge in a horizontal manner and knot is
tied.
2. The distance of the needle penetration from the incisal line and the depth
penetration of the needle is the same for each entry point.
3. The horizontal distance of the points of penetration on the same side of
the incision (needle penetration should be at least "8" mm from the
incision edge).
Principles of Suturing:
1. The needle should be grasped at approximately (1/3) of the distance from
the eye and (2/3) from point.
2. The needle should penetrate the tissue vertically to its surface.
3. The needle should be placed at an equal distance (2– 3) mm from the
incision line.
