Hello, today I will talk about dancing as a sport. Dancing is one of the
oldest and most well-known forms of expression. It is not only fun but also
a sport that requires a lot of energy and discipline. I will talk a bit about
dancing in general and the history of dance.
What is dancing?
Dancing means moving to music. There are many types of dance, such as
ballet, hip-hop, ballroom and Latin dances, or breakdance. In dancing, you
need strength, endurance, and a good sense of rhythm. You can dance
alone or with others. Many dancers train like athletes because they need a
lot of technique, body control, and fitness.
The history of dance
Dance has existed for a very long time. In the past, people danced to tell
stories or to honour gods. In the Middle Ages, people often danced at the
courts of kings for entertainment.
The history of hip-hop began in the 1970s in the USA, particularly in the
Bronx, New York. At the same time, breakdance emerged as a dance style.
Hip-hop quickly became popular and developed into a global culture with
music, dance, graffiti, and rap. Today, hip-hop is one of the most
important music and dance styles in the world.
Ballet originated in the 15th century in Italy and France and became very
famous. In the 20th century, new dance styles emerged, such as jazz, hip-
hop, and breakdance. Today, there are major dance competitions, such as
"Dancing with the Stars" or "World of Dance." Dancers are judged on
technique, creativity, and expression.
My journey as a dancer
I am a dancer and I do hip-hop. When I was 6 years old, I always danced
when music played. That’s why my parents decided to sign me up for
street dance. I did this in Kloosterzande.
After 4 years, I started enjoying it less because the group only consisted of
younger children. So, I switched to Love2Dance in Hulst. I have been
dancing here for 6 years now. I started in the 9 to 11-year age group, with
one dance lesson per week.
Now, I am in 4 different groups and I dance 4 hours a week. These include
2 competition groups, a 16+ group, and a workshop class.
Dancing makes me very happy. When I dance, I forget everything around
