Introduction:
Therapeutic communication is an essential component of healthcare that fosters a supportive
environment for patients. Understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy is
crucial for effective therapeutic communication.
Empathy
➢ Definition: Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings of another
person. It is about putting oneself in someone else’s shoes and genuinely recognizing
their emotional experience.
➢ Characteristics:
1. Active Listening: Involves fully concentrating, understanding, and responding
thoughtfully.
2. Non-Judgmental: Accepts the patient’s feelings without judgment.
3. Validation: Acknowledges the patient’s feelings as legitimate and important.
4. Connection: Builds a deeper emotional connection, making the patient feel
understood and supported.
➢ Example:
A healthcare provider saying, “I can see how difficult this is for you. It’s okay to feel
overwhelmed. I’m here to help you through this.”
Sympathy
➢ Definition: Sympathy involves feeling pity or sorrow for someone else’s
misfortune. It recognizes the emotional experience but does not necessarily involve
understanding it from the other person’s perspective.
