Mental Status Examination (MSE) - Answers is the component of an interview where cognitive functions

What is it? Is it the same as the MSE? - Answers The MMSE is a structural bedside test of various
cognitive functions that is scored out of a maximum of 30 points
The MMSE is not the same as a complete MSE. There are many aspects of the MSE that are not covered
in the MMSE (such as perceptual disturbance, thought process & content disturbances, affect & mood,
etc.)
The MSE is an integral component of competence/capacity assessments. What is competence and what

legal term and the decision about someone's competence is made by a judge

What do descriptions of attire usually include and how can they provide useful information? - Answers
Descriptions often include a comment on overall impression and then the details of how patients are
dressed. *Remember patients have a right to view their medical record so wording is everything*
When attire is taken into context with other signs and symptoms it can provide useful information
-during manic epidsodes patients may dress flamboyantly (bright colors)
-Schizophrenia, depression, dimentia and substance misuse are commen causes for decline in self-care
-Patients with personality disorders can reflect importnat character traits in their choice of clothing
What does Grooming & hygiene indicate? - Answers they are indicators that reflect a patient's level of
self care. Hair, attention to facial hair, skin condition, nails, bodily odor, oral hygiene, and condition of
clothing are the major aspects surveyed
