TEACHER LANGUAGE

You must use direct speech, e.g.'OK everyone, listen very carefully because I'm going to tell you
what to do next. On the wall there are pictures of 12 animals. On these orange cards (hold up a
card) are the names of the animals. I'll give everyone a card with some blu-tack (show back of card
with a blob of blu-tack). Take your card and stick it to the correct animal picture. Juan, what are
you going to do with your orange card?'

You might need to put in some predicted student responses for the vocabulary teaching part.

N.B. If you do not use direct speech, you will be required to resubmit the whole assignment.

Give word for word the language you could use for:

A) Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items which would need to be concept checked,
Show how you would elicit, explain and concept check each of the three items.
First vocab word: Mining (to mine)
Teacher: Ok class. Settle down. I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Today, we are going to be
learning about the topic of family history. Every family has history that is special and different,
including you guys. So, we are going to first go over 12 vocabulary words and then look at a text.
Sound good?
Student(s): Sounds great!
Teacher: Great! Okay so, can anyone in the class tell me the name of the place where people dig
into the ground to get rocks and coal?
Student: …is it a mine?
Teacher: Yes, exactly, thank you MingJie! Has anyone ever been to a mine before?
Student: I have! My uncle works at a mine!
Teacher: Cool! Very interesting HanLi! For everyone else who hasn’t been to a mine, can you
recognise it from this picture?
Student: Yes! I know that place!
Teacher: How do you say a mine in your language.
Student: KuangShan!
Teacher: Thanks WangXi! So, who can tell me the name of someone who works here? What do we
call them?
Student: They are called miners!
Teacher: Exactly, and what do these miners do? We know they take rocks and coal out of the group,
but what is the word called. The miners in the miner are……?
Student: Are they mining?
Teacher: Exactly! That’s the first vocabulary word today. Mining, or to mine. What type of word is
mining?
Student: It is a doing word – a verb!
Teacher: If we say “to mine”, it’s always followed by + something. Who can give me an example of

, how to use the verb in a phase?
Student: The miner likes to mine for coal!
Teacher: Great! So, now we are going to look at how to pronounce the word mining. Can everyone
repeat after me? ˈmaɪnɪŋ.
Student: ˈmaɪnɪŋ
Teacher: Ok class, who can tell me how many syllables the verb mining has?
Student: Mi-Ning. It has two syllables!
Teacher: Yes, two syllables! Great job everyone you’re all on top form today! So, where do we
think the stress is in the word? Is it on the Mi or on the Ning?
Student: I think the stress is on the first syllable. Is that correct?
Teacher: That is exactly correct! So, we have just learned the word mining. Can everyone repeat it
once more after me please? Mining.
Student: Mining.
Teacher: One more time everyone together – mining!
Student: Mining!
Teacher: Does mining mean digging the ground for rocks and coal?
Student: Yes!
Teacher: Do we think mining is a hard job?
Student: Very hard.

Second vocab word: Protest
Teacher: Ok guys, who can tell me what I’m doing. Everyone watch me! *holds up sign that says
we want change*. What do you think I’m acting out?
Student: Are you protesting?
Teacher: Yes! Exactly JinFeng! I am protesting. Does anyone have experience protesting?
Student: I do! I went to the climate change protest in ShangHai!
Teacher: Great! So, XinFei has identified a key word there! Protest. A protest is a public show of
objection to something. Just like I was acting before – I held up the sign that says We Want Change.
In that example, what do you think I was protesting?
Student: Climate Change?
Teacher: I could be, yes. But what group of people do you think I was asking for change from?
Student: Leaders. Like in the government!
Teacher: Exactly, great job MinJie! So protesting is usually against the government. Look at this
picture on the board. These students are protesting against climate change! Ok, can anyone say
other things that people protest about?
Student: War? Rights?
Teacher: Exactly, HaiYuan. That is a great example! People often protest about their rights. Another
thing to add is that some protests are violent and some are peaceful. Can someone tell me what
those words mean?
