PAROTID GLAND
- Divided into deep & superficial lobes
Parotid duct
- Aka stansens duct
- Arised from deep lobe
- Superficial to masseter
- Pierces buccinator
- Opens into oral vestibule
- Opposite 2nd molar
- 5cm long
- Autonomic nerve supply (CN9 & auriculotemporal = branch of V3)
- Blood supply= ext carotid & superficial temporal
Facial nerve passes into the parotid gland & divides into upper / lower trunk
Important structures that run through it
- Facial nerve
- Ext. Carotid artery ( maxilary and superficial temporal branches)
- Retromandibular vein (post to facial vein)
- Intra parotid lymph nodes
