Organizational and Social Background
The U. S nursing shortage is a severe problem for the delivery of healthcare services,
the quality of care to patients, and the overall function of the hospitals. It is not a new
phenomenon that has emerged in the modern world; it has deep roots with different tensions
that affected it and has a historical background such as demographic changes, shifts in the
economy, and policies. This scarcity is a result of the growing elderly population that requires
health services and the early retirement age of nurses. Moreover, the growth of the variety of
offered healthcare services and the enhancement of the chronic diseases’ role have increased
the need for nurses, thus deepening the shortage problem.
The Historical Context and Inflection Points
Certainly, the nursing profession has in the past gone through cycles of shortage and
surplus. Some of the major points of inflection include the post World IIelage in healthcare
services, the introduction of Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s, and the healthcare reforms
including the Affordable Care Act of 2010s. These periods had their oscillations in the
demands and availability of nurses based on the shifts in the policies, economy, and social
requirements. For instance, after World War II there was a massive demand for health
facilities and thus a need for nurses. Likewise, Medicare and Medicaid, which aimed at
providing health care coverage for the citizens of the United States, led to the demand for
nursing professionals to grow. The third area that has experienced heavy pressure on the
nursing workforce is the Affordable Care Act since it played a role in increasing healthcare
coverage for millions of Americans.
