Waarnemen en bewegen HC 3: cortical organization
- Describing how information about objects and actions
is organized in the visual system
Hoe verder in de cortex, hoe gespecialiseerder de
neuronen
- Spatial organization: how different locations in the environment and on
the retina are represented by activity at specific locations in the visual cortex, vergelijk met
wereldkaart
Het begint met de stimulus
Plaatje: retinotope mapping
- Retinotopic map: electronic map of the retina on the cortex. Locations on the cortex
correspond to locations on the retina. This means that two points that are close together on
an object and on the retina will activate neurons that are close together in the brain
Fovea: scherp zien
Cortical magnification: vergroting 0.01 wordt 8% door divergentie in
retina en ook daarna
Location columns: locatie op retina
Orientation columns: 2 kolommen naast elkaar met eigen oriëntatie, wel
dichtbij elkaar. Oriëntatie van de lijn.
Hypercolumn ->
Tiling: fenomeen van de cirkeltjes. Each circle or ellipse in the scene
represented an area that sends information to one location column.
Working together, these columns cover the entire visual field.
- Funcional organization
- Cortical magnification: apportioning of a large area on the cortex to the
small fovea. Fovea: 0.01% of retinal area = 8-10% of cortical map’s area
- Brain imaging: makes it possible to create pictures of the brain’s activity
Hubel and Wiesel
- Experiments in which they recorded from neurons they encountered
as they lowered electrodes into the cortex
