1. Introduction
Education functions as a cornerstone for socio-economic transformation in post-
apartheid South Africa, embodying the nation’s dedication to equity, empowerment, and
sustainable development (Spaull, 2013). Despite extensive legislative reforms and
policy initiatives aimed at redressing historical inequalities, the system continues to
grapple with complex, persistent challenges that significantly influence learner retention,
particularly at the critical transition into secondary education (Department of Basic
Education [DBE], 2021). The first-year secondary school phase (Grade 8) represents a
pivotal juncture, often characterized by heightened dropout rates driven by structural
deficiencies and socio-economic adversities (Motala & Dieltiens, 2019). This paper
examines four core challenges confronting South African schools, analyses their
specific contributions to early secondary dropout patterns, and explores evidence-based
strategies to promote retention and resilience. The discourse underscores the
imperative for systemic reform emphasizing inclusivity, resource adequacy, and
psychosocial support to foster equitable educational outcomes.
