1.1 Overview of Paradigms and Their Impact on Curriculum
Curriculum design is fundamentally influenced by underlying epistemological and
pedagogical paradigms—positivism, interpretivism, critical theory, and post-
structuralism—each shaping the aims, content, teaching strategies, and assessment
methods within the schooling context.
Positivism
• Philosophical Assumptions: Based on empiricism and scientific objectivity,
asserting that knowledge is observable, measurable, and universal.
• Curriculum Aims: Focused on transmitting factual, discipline-based knowledge
to produce measurable competencies, often aligned with vocational or academic
success (Young, 2013).
• Content Selection: Emphasizes structured, standardized syllabi rooted in
disciplines like mathematics, sciences, and technology, privileging objectivity and
replicability.
• Instructional Strategies: Teacher-centred, didactic approaches—lecture-based,
rote learning, drills—aimed at consistency and efficiency.
• Assessment Methods: Predominantly summative, relying on standardized tests
to ensure reliability and comparability, e.g., national examinations.
• Implication in Schooling: Ensures uniform standards but risks marginalizing
diverse learning styles and contextual relevance.
