Assignment 2
Due 17 June 2025
2.1 Human Resource Management
2.1.1 Farm Supervisor – Job Description & Annual Package
Job Title: Farm Supervisor
Reports to: Farm Manager
Location: Mixed farming enterprise (e.g., Free State, South Africa)
Annual Package: 𝑅 360 000 (𝑅 30 000/𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ )—competitive for skilled supervisory
roles, reflecting industry salary benchmarks.
Job Purpose: Oversee maize and poultry operations, ensuring compliance with labor
law and sustainable practices.
Responsibilities:
• Direct maize and poultry activities—planting, feeding, health checks, record keeping,
harvest logistics.
• Supervise and train a team (10–15 workers), applying modern agronomic and animal
welfare techniques.
• Ensure compliance with South African labor laws (Sectoral Determination Worker
Sector), health, and safety standards.
• Monitor machinery, inputs, irrigation, and feed use.
• Maintain and analyze operational records; prepare weekly reports.
Qualifications:
• Diploma or degree in Agricultural Management (or related).
• At least three years' experience in mixed farming.
• Leadership, communication, agricultural technical skills, and legal compliance
knowledge.
Critical Engagement: This role is essential to balancing operational productivity with
labor equity. Lemke & Jansen van Rensburg (2014) stress persistent farmworker
marginalization, highlighting the need for skilled leadership and competitive
compensation. Implementing a 𝑅 360 000/year package addresses rural wage inequities
and fosters labor retention.
