Introduction
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
- Biochemistry 1 studies the molecular
composition of living cells. It involves the study of
structure, function and performance relationships
of biochemical compounds, including
carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins,
enzymes (in the 1st term), vitamins, minerals,
body fluids, nucleotides and nucleic acids (in the
2nd term).
- In Biochemistry 2, you will study their
interactions and their metabolic processes and

,I. Revision of general chemistry:
- Chemistry is the study of composition, properties
and transformation of matter.
- Matter is any thing that has mass and volume.
- Element is a pure substance made of only one
type of atoms.
- Atom is the smallest unit of an element that keeps
the properties of element.
- Compound is a substance made of 2 or more
types of atoms that are chemically bonded.
- Mixture is a combination of 2 or more types of
substances that could be physically separated. It

,• Structure of atom:
1- Nucleus: it contains protons (+Ve) & neutrons
(N). It takes up very little space.
2- Electron cloud: it contains electrons (-Ve). It
takes up most of atom space. They participates in
the chemical reactions (electrons of the outer
shell).
- The number of protons equals the number of
electrons in the neutral atoms.
- The mass number of an element is the total
number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
of that element. (Neut. & Pro. are equal except in
isotopes).
