● A complication of Diabetes Mellitus, predominantly in Type 1 but can
occur in Type 2 .
● Results from insulin deficiency, in response the body switches to
burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies.
● Defined by the presence of
1.Hyperglycemia >11mmol/l
2.Acidosis pH<7.3 HCO3<15mmol/l
3.Ketonuria 2++ /3mmol/l(urine dipstick)
