Parenteral Nutrition

, Parenteral (Intravenous) Nutrition
• A method to provide nutrients to the body by an IV
route.
• Parenteral nutrition is a complex mixture containing
all daily required nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins,
fats, vitamins, minerals, & sterile water) are
delivered to the patient at a constant rate over a
24-hour to meet caloric & nutritional requirements
of the patient & to prevent hyperglycemia (or
hypoglycemia).
• If a patient was healthy prior to critical illness with
no evidence of protein–calorie malnutrition, use of
parenteral nutrition should be reserved & initiated
after the first 7 days of hospitalization.

Indications:
• When Oral or Enteral (tube feeding) nutrition is not
possible.
• When absorption or function of the GI tract is not
sufficient to meet the nutritional needs of the patient
o Intake is insufficient to maintain anabolic state
o Ability to ingest food orally or by tube is impaired
o Patient is not interested or is unwilling to ingest
adequate nutrients.
