Assignment 2
DUE 20 June 2025
QUESTION 1
1.1 Argue the following statement: Science and Technology are inseparable. (10
marks)
Description of Science and Technology:
Science is a systematic process of inquiry that seeks to understand natural phenomena
through observation, experimentation, and theorizing. It emphasizes generating
knowledge about the natural world, such as understanding ecosystems or planetary
motion (CAPS, 2011; Bybee, 2013).
Technology involves applying scientific knowledge to design and create tools, systems,
or processes to solve practical problems. It focuses on human-made artifacts, such as
designing solar panels or water purification systems (ITEA, 2007).
Position: I agree that Science and Technology are inseparable.
Reasons:
Interdependent Processes: Science relies on technology for tools like microscopes or
telescopes to advance discoveries, while technology depends on scientific principles to
develop innovations (Bybee, 2013). For example, the study of DNA (science) requires
sequencing machines (technology).
Curriculum Integration: The South African CAPS document for Natural Sciences and
Technology (Intermediate Phase) integrates both subjects, recognizing their synergy in
fostering inquiry and problem-solving (DBE, 2011). Topics like energy transfer illustrate
scientific concepts (e.g., heat transfer) alongside technological applications (e.g.,
designing insulators).
Real-World Applications: In addressing societal challenges like climate change,
science (e.g., studying carbon cycles) and technology (e.g., developing renewable
energy systems) work together, demonstrating their inseparability (UNESCO, 2017).
