Assignment 2: Teaching Natural Science and Technology
Due 20 June 2025
QUESTION 1
1.1 Science and Technology are inseparable – Argument (10 marks)
Definition and Distinction: Science refers to the systematic study of the structure and
behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation
(Lederman & Abell, 2014). It involves theoretical constructs and aims to generate new
knowledge. Technology, on the other hand, is the application of scientific knowledge for
practical purposes (Mishra & Koehler, 2006). It is primarily problem-solving in nature,
focusing on the design, production, and usage of tools and systems to meet human
needs.
Position: Agree – Science and Technology are inseparable.
Justification:
1. Interdependence: Scientific discoveries often lead to new technologies, and
technological innovations enable new scientific investigations. For instance,
advancements in microscopy (technology) have enabled deeper scientific
exploration in biology (Bain et al., 2010).
2. Curricular Integration: The South African CAPS curriculum for Intermediate
Phase presents Natural Sciences and Technology as an integrated subject,
underlining their interconnection in educational praxis (DBE, 2011).
3. Societal Development: The synergy between science and technology drives
societal advancement. For example, medical science and technological
innovation in diagnostics are interlinked in improving healthcare outcomes
(OECD, 2017).
4. Cognitive Development: Integrated learning helps learners understand abstract
scientific concepts through tangible technological applications, reinforcing
constructivist pedagogy (Driver, Asoko, Leach, Mortimer & Scott, 1994).
