Immunology assignments
Assignment 1: Lectures 1 and 2
1. Enumerate 2 cells belonging to the innate immune system &
2 cells belonging to the acquired immune system.
Innate immune system: Granulocytes ex: Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Mast
cells, Natural Killer cells and Macrophages.
Acquired immune system: B & T lymphocytes.
2. Specify one func on for macrophages, neutrophils,
eosinophils, mast cells, natural killer cell, B cell, Th cell, Tc cell.
Macrophages: phagocytosis.
Neutrophils: phagocytosis.
Eosinophils: phagocytosis of parasites and allergy & inflamma on
Mast Cells: They are the ssue resident form of basophils, they are
found in ssues (not blood), around blood vessels or in the submucosa.
NK cells: Kill abnormal cells non-specifically.
Th cells: Secrete cytokines to help other cells.
Tc cells: Kill abnormal target cells specifically.
3. Define primary and secondary lymphoid organs and give 2
examples for each.
Primary lymphoid organs: These are places where lymphocytes
complete their matura on, becoming mature lymphocytes. Examples
are Bone marrow and Thymus.

Secondary lymphoid organs: These are places where B & T lymphocytes
can meet an gens, leading to their ac va on. Examples are lymph
nodes, spleen, and various mucosal associated lymphoid ssues (MALT),
GALT, BALT.
4. Enumerate types of lymphocytes.
B & T lymphocytes
5. Compare between:
a. Innate immunity & acquired immunity.
b. B cells & T cells
B cells and T cells: B cells have a lifespan of 5-6 weeks, and their
func on is carrying B cell receptor and change into plasma cells to
secrete an bodies. T cells have a lifespan of 30-160 days, and their
func on is T helper (Th) cells: Secrete cytokines to help other cells (B
cells, NK, Tc, macrophages), T cytotoxic (Tc) cells: Kill abnormal target
cells (specifically) e.g., virally infected cells, tumor cells, gra cells.
