answers(latest update ,graded A+
Which of the following processes occurs during celluar/capillary gas exchange?

A. The cells give up oxygen to the capilaries.

B. The cells recieve carbon dioxide from the capilaries.

C. The capilaries give up oxygen to the cells.

D. The capilaries give up carbon dioxide to the cells. - answer C. The capilaries give up oxygen to
the cells.

Capillary gas exchange is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs (CAP) to the bloodstream (CELLS)
and the elimination of carbon dioxide to the lungs.

To obtain the MOST reliable assessment of a patient's tidal volume you should:

A. Assess for retractions

B. Listen for airway noises

C. Count the respiratory rate

D. Look at the rise of the chest - answer D. Look at the rise of the chest

Tidal volume is the amount of air in mililiters breathed into or out of the lungs in a single breath.

What is the function of pulmonary surfacant?

A. It carries fresh oxygen from the lungs to the left side of the heart

B. It dialates bronchioles in the lungs and enhances the flow of air

C. It lubricates the aveolar walls and allows them to expand and recoil

D. It facilitates the production of mucous, which is expelled during coughing - answer C.
Lubricates the walls allowing them to expand and recoil.

,Surfacant is a compund that lines the inside of the aveoli. It reduces surface tension on the
aveolar wall allowing the aveloli the expand and recoil easily

A patient with a mild forgien body airway obstruction:

A. Is typically not cyanotic

B. presents with a weak cough

C. has a low oxygen saturaiton

D. has progressive difficulty breathing - answer A. Not cyanotic.

Patients with a mild obstruction are typically not cyanotic because they are able to move small
amounts of air in and out of the lungs still and maintain an adequate level of oxygen in the
blood.

Difference between head tilt chin lift maneuver and the jaw thrust maneuver? Which is
preffered for a patient with suspected spinal injury? - answer Head tilt is more movement of the
head. Jaw thrust is far less movement and is to be used when there is a supected spinal injury.

During the inhalation phase of breathing

A. the diaphram and intercostal muscles contract and ascend.

B. air passively enters the lungs and pressure within the thorax increases

C. pressure within the thorax decreases as air is drawn into the lungs

D. the muscles between the ribs relax which lifts the ribs up and out - answer C. decrease in
pressure

During inhalation the diaphram and intercostal muscles do contract but the move downward
(decends). The ribs do move up and out but they do it as the intercostal muscles CONTRACT. As
we inhale the throatic cage expands and pressure in the throax decreases.

, All of the following would cause an increased level of carbon dioxide in the arterial blood
EXCEPT:

A. reduced tidal volume

B. deep, rapid breathing

C. short exhalation phase

D. slow shallow breathing - answer B. deep, rapid breathing

Adequate oxygen intake requires a patent airway and adequate breathing. Deep rapid breathing
would actually eleiminate carbon dixoide from the body.

Which of the following occurs during postive pressure ventilation:

A. The esophagus remains closed

B. Interthoratic pressure increases

C. Blood is drawn back to the heart

D. Oxygen is pulled into the lungs - answer B. Pressure increases

The normal process of breathing (negative epressure ventilation) decreases pressure in the
throax and creates a vaccum as the intercostal muscles contract. During normal breathing the
esophagus remains closed and air is pulled into the lungs. And blood is drawn back into the
heart. IN CONTRAST postive pressure ventilation does the opposite of all these things.
Esophagus is forced open and air enters the stomach, oxygen is forced into the lungs and
postive pressure actually impairs blood flow to the heart.

An unresponsive 60 yr old patient is apenic and has a weak rapid pulse. His oxygen saturation
level is 79% you should:

A. Deliver one breath over one second every 5-6 seconds

B. use a pocket mask to deliver 12-20 breaths per minute

C. Hyperventilate him until his oxygen saturation improves
