Critical Exploration of Awareness Campaigns for Gender-Based Violence and
Persons with Disabilities
Context and Relevance of Awareness Campaigns
Intersectionality of GBV and Disability
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global issue that disproportionately affects women
and girls. Globally, one in three women and girls experience physical or sexual violence
in their lifetime, according to UN Women (2020). For those with disabilities, particularly
womn and girls, the risk of violence is even higher due to the compounding effects of
gender and disability discrimination. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) highlights this increased vulnerability, noting that
women and girls with disabilities face elevated risks of abuse, neglect, and exploitation
due to systemic marginalization (OHCHR, 2008). Factors like poverty, unemployment,
and limited access to education and information worsen their vulnerability, restricting
their independence and ability to make decisions (Namatovu et al., 2019).
Awareness campaigns are crucial for addressing GBV by educating communities,
challenging harmful stereotypes, and promoting inclusive policies. However, their
success hinges on their ability to address intersectional challenges and engage diverse
groups, including people with disabilities. This analysis draws on a CBM Global (2025)
article, which explores disability-inclusive strategies for ending GBV, to critically assess
the impact of such campaigns and propose improvements.
