Steps of Ethical Problem Solving
1. Identifying the ethical standards, as defined by the professional code of
ethics, that are being compromised
2. Determining whether an ethical issue or dilemma exists
3. Weighing ethical issues in light of the social work values and principles as
defined by the professional code of ethics
4. Suggesting modifications in light of prioritized ethical values and principles

Steps to conduct an ethics audit
1. A staff member should assume the role of chair of the ethics audit committee
2. The audit committee should identify ethics-related issues on which to focus
3. Data may be gathered from documents and interviews. The committee should
also review relevant codes of ethics and federal and state statutes and
regulations
4. Once the necessary data are gathered, the committee should assess the risk
levels
5. An action plan for each risk area that warrants attention, beginning with high-
risk issues, should be developed
6. The committee should identify which staff will be responsible for the various
tasks and establish a timetable for completion of each and a mechanism to
follow up on each task to ensure its completion and monitor its implementation
