DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS WORK SHEET
OSMOSIS
Sheep Blood is added to one of the following three solutions and allowed to sit for 3 hrs.
Solutions: DISTILLED WATER, 0.9% NaCl, 2.5% NaCl

Solution A is_______________________hypertonic____2.5% NaCl_________

Explain what happened and why the test tube appears the way it does.

fluid outside are more concentrated than inside so water moves out of the cell.

Liquid surrounding cells has many amounts of solute. hypertonic compared to the cell.
higher concentration of solute particles and lower concentration of water. the solute
molecules can't pass through the membrane to reach equilibrium but water molecules
can. Water molecules on the outside are obstructed from passing through by solvent
molecules. Water rushes out of cell, with only some* water coming in. Since the net
movement of the water molecules is outward, it causes the cell to shrink, crenation.

The tonicity is greater inside of the cells than in the solution

Solution B is___________________hypotonic____________distilled water______

Explain what happened and why the test tube appears the way it does.
