Introduction
The historical progression of women's engagement in physical activities and sports across
the last two generations has been characterized by notable societal transformations. This study
examines the experiences of women throughout many generations, with a specific emphasis on
the period before and after the implementation of Title IX in 1972. In this study, I will begin by
analyzing the viewpoints of older women, namely my mother and grandparents. Subsequently, I
will juxtapose their experiences with those of two women belonging to my age. My primary
objective is to investigate the many elements that have influenced the engagement, constraints,
or hindrances faced by individuals in their involvement in sports. This study will emphasize the
cultural changes that have contributed to disparities in the first sporting encounters of
contemporary young women.
Perspectives from Elderly Women
The study started with conducting interviews with the maternal figure and grandparents
to get insights about their participation in physical activities and sports prior to the year 1972.
The experiences of these individuals provide valuable insights into the many problems and
possibilities that they encountered.
My Mother's Perspective
During the 1960s, there were cultural conventions that often prohibited women from
engaging in athletics, an experience that my mother personally encountered during her
upbringing. She recollected that there was a scarcity of organized sports alternatives for female
students inside her educational institution. Physical education lessons prioritized traditional
