Safety
1. Keep loose items away from pathways (walking area) in lab
2. Keep specimens and equipment securely fastened on table
3. Don’t use equipment you’re not authorized to use
4. Don’t remove equipment (like microscope) or specimens from lab
5. Dispose chemicals or specimens properly
6. Keep food and drinks out of lab (to prevent ingestion)
7. Know where safety equipment is (like where eye wash is from splashing
chemical, or sharps containers to discard broken glass)
8. Prevent environmental hazards: tie hair back, wear protective gear like gloves or eyewear
Anatomical Position
Standing erect, feet flat on floor, arms at sides, palms and eyes facing forward
Planes
Sagittal Plane — divides body into right and left halves
• Midsagittal Plane — divides body into EQUAL right and left halves (along midline)
• Parasagittal Plane — divides body into UNEQUAL right
and left halves Frontal/Coronal Plane — divides body into front and
back (anterior and posterior) Transverse Plane — divides body into
upper and lower halves
Directional terms
Ventral / Anterior — towards the front of body. Ex: sternum is anterior to
heart Dorsal / Posterior — towards the back of body. Spinal cord is
dorsal to heart.
Superior — above, or towards to
head Inferior — below, or towards
the feet
Medial — closer towards the midline
Lateral — further from the midline
Proximal — closer to point of
attachment Distal — further from
point of attachment
Superficial — closer to body surface (i.e. skin is most superficial organ in
body) Deep — further from body surface (i.e. internal organs are deeper
than skin)
Prone — lying face down on
belly Supine — lying face up
, on back
