CHEM120 OL, Week 1 Lab

Name:

OL Lab 1: Chemistry Safety and Atomic Structure: Assess the possibility of life
on other planets

Part 1: Complete Labster Lab Chemistry Safety
Complete all activities and answer all questions within the lab and then
complete the questions below:
1. Look up an MSDS of the chemical HCl. What are the major hazards
and what precautions would you take when handling this chemical?
HCl is hazardous as it can cause respiratory irritation, serious eye irritation,
skin irritation and may be corrosive to metals.
One should take the following precautions when handling the chemical:
Always put-on personal protective equipment like gloves, face mask and eye
protection. Always put the chemical in its original container and always
dispose to an approved waste disposal plant.
Wash hands after handling the chemical with plenty of water and incase of
contact with the chemical, wash with plenty of soap and water.
Avoid inhaling mist of vapors of the chemical directly into the nose

2. Why is proper waste disposal important in a lab setting?
To avoid harming other students with hazardous chemicals.
To avoid causing unwanted chemical reaction that could lead to harm.
To protect other students and lab personnel from contaminating with a
harmful waste product.

3. Why is the proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) key to
a safe lab experience?
PPE protects one from being harmed by harmful products
PPE protects one from being in direct contact with hazardous
chemicals.
PPE protect against accidental spills, splashes, and other incidents
that could lead to injury or contamination.

Part 2: Complete Labster Lab Atomic Structure: Assess the possibility of life on
other planets
Complete all activities and answer all questions within the lab and then
complete the activities below

1. Purpose: Describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the
purpose of this experiment.

, CHEM120 OL, Week 1 Lab

Name:
The purpose of this experiment was to learn more about an atom
structure and its sub atomic properties. The experiment was
intended to help us learn the arrangement of protons, neutrons
and electrons. The experiment was also intended to help us
understand the periodic table, atomic numbers, atomic mass and
isotopes. These skills enabled us study possibilities of other
planets supporting extraterrestrial life.
2. Observations: Record three observations from the simulation.
I. Atoms are made up of nucleus with protons and neutrons
surrounded by negatively charged electrons.
II. The atom’s mass is determined by the mass of protons and
neutrons which may be equal or unequal in cases of
isotope.
III. Stones collected in the alien planet were of different colors (grey
and white). When tested in the lab with acid, they indicated
presence of carbon as part of organic compounds in the rocks.

3. In your own words, explain the terms below:
a. Ion: Ion is an atom that has a positive or negative electrical
charge after losing or gaining an electron in a chemical
reaction.

b. Isotope: Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the
same proton number, different neutron numbers and
different relative mass.

4. Describe the three subatomic particles that make up atoms. Be
sure that you include their locations within the atoms.
An atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and
neutrons are contained in the nucleus while electrons are located
in the electron shell surrounding the nucleus. Protons are
positively charged; electrons are negatively charged but
neutrons have no electric charge.

5. You have an atom of carbon with a mass number of 14. Determine
the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons you would expect
this atom to possess.
The average mass number of carbon is usually 12, therefore, a
carbon atom with mass number 14 is an isotope.
Therefore, it will have:
Protons- 6
Neutrons- 8
