2.1.1 Geometric Shapes in Nature
Geometric shapes in nature reflect underlying mathematical structures that support both
efficiency and visual harmony. These shapes are not coincidental; they emerge from
physical, biological, and environmental constraints.
1. Sunflower Head: The seed arrangement follows the Fibonacci sequence,
forming logarithmic spirals that maximise space usage (Livio, 2002). This natural
pattern reveals how plants optimise growth and light exposure.
2. Snowflake: Each snowflake displays six-fold symmetry and a hexagonal
structure due to hydrogen bonding angles in water molecules (Ball, 2009). This
uniformity reflects molecular precision.
3. Spider Web: Circular with radial symmetry, a spider web combines geometric
principles with engineering functionality. Its design enables stability and efficient
trapping of prey.
These examples reveal geometry as both a visual and functional principle embedded in
the natural world.

Geometry is foundational in many cultural expressions of art, revealing how societies
use form to represent ideas, beliefs, and identity.
• Islamic Art: Uses repeated star polygons and tessellations that symbolise unity
and infinity, echoing theological perspectives on divine order (Abas & Salman,
