SOCIAL PERSUASION & FICTION
Social Persuasion
Introduction
The article "One step forward two steps backward… LGBTQI Rights in Africa" (Sonke
Gender Justice, 02 August 2023) provides a compelling analysis of the legal
contradictions surrounding same-sex unions and criminalisation across African states.
Targeting African citizens and policymakers who influence or form opinions on LGBTQI
rights, the article aims to expose these legal inconsistencies and galvanise support for
uniform legal recognition of LGBTQI relationships.
Critical Analysis of Persuasive Strategies
Appeal to Logic (Logos)
The article employs precise statistics to illuminate the systemic nature of anti-LGBTQI
legislation: "Same-sex relations remain illegal in more than 30 African countries." This
quantification transforms what might otherwise be perceived as isolated anomalies into
evidence of a widespread issue. The text assumes rational readers will recognise a
moral imperative when confronted with such overwhelming legal disparities. However,
the absence of longitudinal data on legal changes limits the ability to fully contextualise
recent progress or regression.
Historical Context and Authority
By asserting that "Much of Africa’s anti-same-sex legislation originated during colonial
rule," the article challenges the narrative that homophobia is inherently 'African.'
