Lab 5 Tissues and Skin BIO201L
Student Name: Sydney VanPolen
Access Code (located on the lid of your lab kit): AC-28NOZ5Q
Pre-Lab Questions:
”1. What is a tissue?”
a group of cells that posses’s a similar structure and works together to complete specific tasks and
functions.”
2. What is the function of epithelial tissue? ”
To secrete, protect, and sense.
3. What is the function of connective tissue? ”
To support, protect, and insulate.”
4. What is the function of muscular tissue? ”
To help the body move.”
5. What is the function of nervous tissue? ”
To receive and sned impulses between the brain and spinal cord.”
6. Describe sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and hairs with regard to the function of the skin. ”
They all help prevent water loss, they kill certain micro bacteria, and they help cool down the body.”
7. What is the function of melanin? ”
It protects the body from UV rays while giving color to the skin, hair, and eyes.”
8. List the similarities and differences of the layers of the epidermis. ”
One major similarity is that the layers of the epidermis join together to protect the body. There are many
differences which include that the stratum coreum is made up of dead keratinocytes which are
surrounded by protein, while the cell layer is composed of 20-30 layers of dead cells. The stratum
granulosum contains 3-5 layers that productive keratinocytes. The process of keratinization begins in the
stratum spinosum, which is where melanin is. Lastly, the stratum basale only consists of one layer.
Experiment 1: Microscopic Slide Examination of Tissue
”Identify the following tissue slides: ”
A- Simple squamous epithelium
B- Simple cuboidal epithelium
C- Adipose connective tissue
D- Reticular connective tissue
E- Elastic cartilage connective tissue
F- Cardiac muscle tissue
G- Skeletal muscle tissue
H- Reticular connective tissue
