Critical Perspectives on Mathematical Views and Pedagogical Approaches
Question 3.1 – LU1: Mathematics in Society
Problem Statement
Define the differences between the three views used to outline mathematics
consideration.
Critical Analysis and Explanation
Toolbox/Instrumentalist View
The toolbox view frames mathematics as a practical set of facts, skills, and rules applied
to achieve external objectives, such as solving routine problems. It assumes knowledge
is a fixed entity, transmitted directly from teacher to learner through memorization and
replication. Implicit in this stance is a mechanistic epistemology, where mathematical
meaning is predefined and independent of learner agency. However, this perspective
risks oversimplifying mathematics, reducing it to rote tasks devoid of personal or
intellectual significance. A critical tension emerges between its emphasis on passive
absorption and the need for active sense-making, which fosters deeper understanding.
By prioritizing procedural fluency over exploration, it may stifle creativity and limit
learners’ ability to adapt mathematical knowledge to novel contexts. Broader
implications include a potential disconnect between mathematics and real-world
relevance, which could undermine learner motivation and engagement.
