Purpose of study:The purpose of the study was to explore the individual, interpersonal, and
socioenvironmental factors and conditions that constrained mothers’ ability to make preferred food
choices for their preschool-aged children, and the strategies that mothers used to push back against
these constraints. The study was deemed necessary due to the prevalence of obesity in Canadian
children and its effects on healthcare costs, physical and psychological wellbeing, and ability to
engage with peers and participate in physical sports/activities” (Walsh, Meagher-Stewart, &
Macdonald, 2015).
Research The research design method used was a constructivist grounded theory.
Design This method uses fewer participants than most descriptive research
methods. The reasoning for fewer subjects is the increased ability to
conduct more detailed interviews. The type of methodology employed
is not aimed at generalization but instead allows for the potential to
further investigate important points (Mills, Bonner, & Francis, 2006)
Sample The study included a theoretical sampling of mothers with toddlers (ages
Selection 3-5yrs.). The subjects were selected from settings that provided services
to preschool aged children in a large municipality in Eastern Canada.
“Participants included 18 mothers with children between the ages of 3
and 5, who did not have any dietary restrictions and represented a range
of economic, educational, cultural, and geographical
backgrounds,”[CITATION Wal15 \l 1033 ]
Data All the interviews followed a semi-structured approach that consisted of
Collection open-ended questions which allowed the participant to have greater
Methods control over the conversation, but after interaction with the participants,
the range of topics was adjusted to gather more specific data. The
interviews were followed up with either a second face to face interview
or a telephone interview. The researchers spent 16 months collecting
data and making observations based on information obtained the
