1) Mental Status Examination: View the recorded psychiatric interview submitted in Week 4
and observe the mental status of your volunteer. Use appropriate terminology to document your
observations of the mental status exam (MSE) components below.
Appearance 19 y/o Caucasian male, appears to be stated age, well-
nourished and well developed. He is alert and oriented.
Casually dressed, well groomed, somewhat short and
stocky build. Good gaze w/ no abnormal body
movements.
Behavior and attitude Normal affect with calm and cooperative demeanor.
Appears relaxed and comfortable during the interview.
Maintains good eye contact.
Speech Speech is clear, normal volume, and coherent. Normal
pitch and tone.
Affect and mood Mood positive.
Affect happy, good variation in facial expression and
tone of voice.
, Thought process Normal thought process. No flight of ideas. Thoughts
are coherent and linear.
Thought content He denies having any hallucinations, delusions,
obsessions. No suicidal or homicidal ideations. Some
intrusive thoughts R/T assignments.
2) Cognitive Examination: Describe specific age-appropriate exam techniques that could be used
to assess the cognitive status of your volunteer. Include the following components:

Level of awareness The patient is alert and oriented to person, time, place,
or wakefulness and situation.
This was established using the MSE.
Attention and Good attention and concentration throughout the
concentration interview.
The months backward test (MBT) may be used to
assess cognitive impairment (Carlat, 2017). However,
the pt was able to stay focused and answer questions
appropriately during the interview. Additional testing
was not required.
