Every year over 5 millions of used plastic is exported from developed countries to developing
countries. This all is being done under the label of " recycling ". India is one of the recipients of
this exported waste. In 2023 India imported 23,000 metric tons of plastic waste.
As a matter of fact, India, itself is not able to recycle it's own plastic waste as it is piling up day
by day in full swing. For example almost 2,80,000 plastic bottles go uncollected in the country.
They choke drains, clog rivers and fill the streets.
The question is why our companies import trash for recycling if they are unable to recycle our
own plastic waste which is accumulating at alarming levels?. The answer is simple, because it is
cheaper to import plastic waste than to pay local waste collectors to gather and transport it.
The net result is that our country's own plastic waste is heaping up and the imported plastic is
getting added to the overburdened landfills, much of which is not being recycled.
If the war footing measures are not taken the situation can be scary within a short span of time.
This all happens when we create a society where " profit" is a sole motive. But we forget that at
the end it has toxic consequences.
