Question 4.1: Cognitive Levels for Assessments in the FET Band in Geography
Overview
The Further Education and Training (FET) band, spanning Grades 10 to 12 in South
Africa, mandates assessments aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy to foster progressive
cognitive development in Geography, as stipulated by the Curriculum and Assessment
Policy Statement (CAPS). This response enhances the original table of cognitive
weightings by critically examining the philosophical underpinnings of cognitive
progression, exposing tensions in its application, and refining the narrative for clarity
and academic rigour while preserving all original content.
Suggested Weighting of Cognitive Levels in the FET Band
The CAPS document prescribes cognitive weightings to balance foundational
knowledge with advanced analytical skills, reflecting a developmental trajectory across
Grades 10 to 12 (Department of Basic Education, 2011; Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001).
