MOTION IN A
STRAIGHT LINE

Class 11ᵗʰ

, Branches Of Physics Didn’t understand? Watch
the video (Click Here)

There are two branches in physics that examine the motion of an object.
(i) Kinematics: It describes the motion of objects, without looking at the cause of
the motion.
(ii) Dynamics: It relates the motion of objects to the forces that cause them.

Rest and Motion
Rest: An object is said to be at rest if it does not change its position
with respect to its surroundings over time.

Motion: An object is said to be in motion if it changes its position
with respect to its surroundings over time.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
There is no such thing as absolute motion or absolute rest.
The state of rest or motion depends on the reference point
chosen to observe the object.

Frame of Reference the video (Click Here)

The frame of reference for rest and motion is a coordinate system or viewpoint
from which the position of an object is observed to determine whether it is at rest
or in motion.

Position of a Point
The position of a point refers to its specific location in space at a given moment,
described relative to the origin of a selected frame of reference.

Position of a Point

One-dimensional Two-dimensional Three-dimensional
position position position
One-dimensional position: The position of a particle is described by a single
coordinate along a straight line.
For example, the position of a train along a straight track, the position of a
freely falling body under gravity, etc.
Two-dimensional position: The position of a particle is described using two
coordinates in a plane.
