QUESTION 1: Visual Arts Activity Design (30 Marks)
1.1 Description of the Visual Arts Activity
Title: Recycled Faces: Emotion from Everyday Things
In this 30-minute Visual Arts lesson for Grade 5, learners engage in a creative activity
centred on constructing expressive portraits using limited and recycled materials. The
process begins with learners sketching the outline of a human face on recycled
cardboard using a pencil. They then cut and collage facial features—such as eyes,
mouths, and accessories—using discarded paper and packaging materials, creatively
arranging them to form an emotional expression. A single coloured medium (e.g.,
crayon) is selectively applied to emphasise the emotional tone of the face, such as red
to symbolise anger or blue to denote sadness.
This activity fosters both technical and emotional literacy. Learners develop spatial
awareness, symbolic interpretation, and fine motor skills, while simultaneously engaging
in visual storytelling through facial expressions. The 30-minute lesson structure consists
of:
• 5 minutes for conceptual framing and teacher demonstration
• 20 minutes for active creation and problem-solving
• 5 minutes for peer sharing and reflective dialogue
By introducing artistic constraints (limited tools and materials), learners are challenged
to make thoughtful, innovative decisions, transforming limitation into opportunity—a key
pedagogical strategy in under-resourced learning environments.
