QUESTION 1: Visual Arts Activity Design
1.1 Description of the Visual Arts Activity
The proposed activity, structured for a 30-minute lesson, engages Grade 5 learners in
creating a textured collage inspired by South African landscapes using recycled
materials. Learners collect used cereal boxes and cardboard from a classroom recycling
box, foregrounding an ethic of sustainability that underpins the entire exercise. The
activity commences with a 5-minute contextual discussion on South African
landscapes (e.g., mountains, savannas), activating prior knowledge and situating the
creative task within learners’ lived experiences and cultural environments.
For the next 15 minutes, learners tear or cut cardboard into shapes representing
landscape elements such as mountains and trees, arranging them on a recycled paper
base to form a collage. By employing a single coloured medium (crayon), learners
add texture through rubbing or cross-hatching techniques to depict natural patterns like
grass or rocky surfaces. This approach is underpinned by the philosophical stance that
creativity is not contingent upon material abundance but rather on the imaginative
transformation of accessible resources.
The final 10 minutes involve a class gallery walk, wherein learners present their
collages and articulate their creative choices. This reflection stage fosters
metacognition, collaborative critique, and aesthetic appreciation.
Learning Outcomes: Learners develop fine motor skills through manipulating
materials, enhance creativity by transforming waste into art, and build environmental
awareness by using recycled materials. Moreover, they engage in critical thinking by
interpreting landscapes artistically, fostering a deeper sense of place and identity.
