Structure and Function #1
❖ External genitalia (penis & scrotum)
o Penis: used for urination and reproduction
Components
➢ Shaft: body of penis, composed of 3 cylindrical masses of vascular
erectile tissue bounded together by fibrous tissue
➢ Glans: Base of glans (corona) is larger than shaft of penis. If
uncircumcised, prepuce covers the glans.
o Scrotum: Thin-walled sac suspended blow pubic bone, posterior to penis. Contains
sweat & sebaceous glands & consists of rugae and cremaster muscle.
o Scrotal sac: Protective covering for testes, epididymis, vas deferens to maintain
cooler than body temp for formation for sperm. <37 degrees C. Cremaster muscle
contracts when cold & relax when warm.
❖ Internal genitalia
oTestes: 2 testes divided by septum.
Covered by tunica vaginalis which is
double layer & lubricated to protect
testes from injury. Produces
spermatozoa & testosterone.
oSpermatic cord: Suspend the the
testes. Contains blood vessels,
lymphatic vessels, nerves & vas
deferens- which transports
spermatozoa away from testes. Cord
on left side is longer so left testis
hangs lower than right.
oEpididymis: Curves over upper &
posterior surface of testis. Where
spermatozoa matures
