1. Name and briefly describe three major goals of the Criminal Justice System
described in your textbook. (2 points)
Answer: 1) General and Specific Deterrence: General deterrence is the punishment
brought upon an individual to set an example so that others will not follow, and specific
deterrence is to punish the individual so that the same individual does not repeat the
crime when released. (Marion & Oliver, 2006)
2) Incapacitation: The policy refers to the separation between dangerous
criminals and low risk criminals. When dangerous criminals are punished, they will by
lock up to eliminate future offenses. (Marion & Oliver, 2006)
3)Teach Morality: This term is used to differentiate actions of moral and
immoral behavior. (Marion & Oliver, 2006)
2. What is the difference between a law and a policy? Give an example of each in the
criminal justice system. (2 points)
Answer: Law stands above all, it is the top of the justice pyramid. In other words, it is the
set standard that all people are required to abide by in order to justice and order to the
governed society. Policy stands right below law, because policies conduct itself within
the parameters of the law. It cannot undermine the law or else it violates the law itself.
Organizations have policies that help them enforce the law. These policies become the
fundamental behavior for the organization to operate on a daily basis. (Marion & Oliver,
2006)
