Introduction to SOCIOLOGY
What is sociology?
● The study of society. A social science that studies the social lives of people, group and society
○ The study of behavior as social beings. From short contacts between strangers to global
social processes
● Scientific study of social aggregation
○ aggregation - forming a cluster; considered as a whole
● How do you become a person, a subject, a part of society, relationships/ communication to
the person.
● How do they affect other people
● Psychology and sociology, very similar. Sociology is more group based.
● Economic aspect- affect life in all sorts of ways
Sociology can :
● liberating (free up, let loose) practical activity, teach you who you are and what you become,
help us create the best possible future
● The systematic study of human behavior in a social context
PERSONAL troubles to social structures
-A main goal for sociologist: identify and explain how personal troubles are connected to social
structures
Social structures:
relatively stable patterns of social relations
● 3 levels of social structure:
