- Minimal Brain Damage (MBD) → in the fifties
- ADHD result of brain damage during pregnancy / early after birth
- DSM-2: the hyperkinetic reaction of childhood

- DSM-3: ADD/H & ADD/V
- 2 subtypes: With or without hyperactivity
- DSM-4: ADHD-c, ADHD-I, ADHD-HI
- 3 subtypes: intentive, compulsive
- DSM-5: current symptom presentations (C, I, HI)
- No subtypes but current symptom presentations, it can change
