Bone Rule The beam should be centered over the
midsection of the bone, including the
joints at each end of the bone.
Joint Rule The beam should be centered directly
over the joint and should include approx.
1 inch of each of the bones that make
the joint.
Positioning How the animal would look if it were lying on the
table ready to have the x-ray taken.
Landmarks Refers to items on the outside of the
animal that we can use to determine
whether or not we're including all of a
certain limb or body part in the x-ray.
Two methods of 1) with the scapula placed dorsal to the

lateral view of the superimposed over the lung
scapula
Place animal lateral with affected
shoulder closest to cassette. Hold the
Scapula dorsal to affected shoulder perpendicular to
vertebral column x-ray spine. Grasp affected leg below elbow
and extend
dorsally. Pull the opposite leg ventrally.
Sedation is suggested. Beam center is
the middle of the scapula.
Measurement is the thickest area of
scapula.
Place animal lateral with affected
Scapula superimposed shoulder down. Pull caudally and
over cranial thorax ventrally while extending upper limb
cranially, out of view. Beam centered on
the middle of scapula. Measurement on
the Cranioventral thorax where
scapula is positioned.
Dorsal recumbancy with both legs
Caudocranial (DV) extended cranially. Rotate sternum
view of Scapula away from scapula 10-12 degrees.
Place beam center over middle of
scapula. Measurement should be
made a the scapulo humeral joint.
Lateral with shoulder down. Extend leg cranially

with opposite limb pulled
Lateral view of caudodorsal direction. Beam center to
shoulder shoulder point. Measurement of thickest
area over shoulder joint.
Place in dorsal recumbency. Extend both
Dorsal Caudocranial forelimbs cranially. Humerus almost
(DV) View of Scapula parallel to cassette. Can compare both
shoulders with this view. Beam center is
to shoulder joint. Measurement over
shoulder joint (armpit)
Extend leg in cranioventral direction , with
Lateral view of opposite limb drawn caudodorsally.
humerus Extend head and neck dorsally. Include
both shoulder and elbow joint with
humerus centered. Beam center of
humerus. Measurement is thickest area
over shoulder joint.
